SOUND PROOF YOUR DOG-- someone a few blocks from our apartment has started setting off fireworks already, and we know that New Years will have them too. NOW is the time to help your dog get used to these sounds-- especially if you have a young dog. I highly recommend an app called "Sound Proof Puppy Training" that may have a small fee if I recall. It provides a wide array of useful audio clips that you can play individually, or on a repeating loop. You can start playing it on a very low volume while your dog is just chilling, and if he shows any interest in it, show him your phone but just act nonchalant. Slowly over many sessions, raise the volume until you can play any of them without his being the least bit concerned. We want it to be boring. If you DO experience a loud noise in real life, immediately click and reward your dog before he has a chance to react. In fact, when I heard the fireworks go off now, I was in my office and I walked into the next room to reward my dog for being chill. The app has a great library of sounds, all of which you'll want to gently introduce to your dog.
