DOG VOCABULARY (AND INTRODUCING CHASER, THE BORDER COLLIE)

Meet Chaser, who has a vocabulary of over 1,000 words.  In this short clip (featuring Neil DeGrasse Tyson!) we see how we underestimated the intelligence of dogs, thinking humans are the only animals capable of inference-- meaning being able to solve a problem by ruling other things out.  In this case, Chaser is asked to retrieve an object he's never seen before (nor heard of before) from among a group of objects he already knows.  You'll love this video-- and I share it to remind us that YOUR dog is this smart, too.  The owner of this dog was a professor in Behavioral Science at a university in South Carolina.  He applied the same simple rules to this dog that you are learning here.  It's science, it works, and it's fun.  Take a look.  By the way, there is a lovely book written by the owner about Chaser that's appropriate in its reading level for young people so if you have kids who are interested in the topic of dog training, it's a great book for them.  https://youtu.be/omaHv5sxiFI?si=t0uCFB-putLVUX0Z
