When you have a training session with your dog you need to be explicit about which criterion you're working on (duration, or distraction, or distance, for example) . In my training handouts (available here) this analysis is already thought out for you. But you should always be clear in your own mind what you're working on in THIS specific 2-5 min training session. Otherwise, you bounce around in what you focus on (and reinforce) and you make it harder for your dog.
